Have you seen or heard someone mention a Teacup Yorkie? Maybe a Micro Yorkie? How about a Tiny or Mini? No matter what you call this small sized Yorkie, these special Yorkies simply don't exist. But wait, my friend has an "Insert Description Here" Yorkie. I've seen it. They must be real!
I am sorry, but you've all been caught up in the buzz words some breeders use to sell their smaller dogs at higher prices. What you've been taught through the internet and by word of mouth is simply untrue. There is no such thing as a Teacup, Tiny, Micro, Mini, Toy, Extreme Tiny or any other term used to sell these highly desirable and very expensive Yorkies. There is only one size of Yorkie recognized by the different national and internationally recognized Yorkshire Terrier Clubs. This is a purebred Yorkie, no more than 7lbs. You will never find a pedigree stating anything other than "YorkshireTerrier" to describe the breed. See our Breed Standard page for information on the only recognized Yorkshire Terriers.
So now what? I still really want a small Yorkie! There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a smaller sized Yorkie. There are many things to keep in mind when considering a smaller than standard Yorkie.
First, be prepared to spend more money. In many cases, a whole lot more.
Second, be prepared to wait on a waiting list for many months, even a year or longer. Or spend countless hours searching for a smaller pup that by some luck hasn't been snatched up already.
Third, these smaller pups usually have serious health issues and shorter life spans. Smaller pups can develop or are born with health issues. Many times this can involve the heart, like an enlarged heart or the liver, like liver shunts. Then you have what many small breeds suffer from, collapsing trachea. This can affect any sized Yorkie. Be aware and prepared to spend more on vet visits for your smaller pet.
Fourth, I'm going to say this again. Your smaller pup has a shorter life span. Are you prepared to say goodbye to your smaller pup at age 2 years? What about 4? This is highly possible with the smaller, undersized dogs.
Fifth, your small pup is very fragile. They can get hurt by jumping off a step, being stepped on or dropped. Here again, be prepared for changing some parts of your life to accommodate your little pup and increased vet bills.
Am I trying to discourage your from having a smaller Yorkie? Not at all. I just want you to be aware of what you sign up for and what issues you may encounter with your smaller pup. Your new fur friend should be a lifelong commitment and the more information you have, the better pet parent you will be.
